Writer’s block can be frustrating when you’re facing a blank screen. As the cursor blinks in anticipation of your forthcoming syllables, it can seem a bit accusatory, if not contemptuous. What would you say if I told you there’s a way to write without writing? A life hack that I recommend to busy clients when encouraging them to increase their blogging activity is that they use dictation applications instead of writing. People traditionally speak faster than they type. It’s also…..
Over the past few months of Quarantine Life, the concept of ‘things as tether’ has floated across my consciousness more than once. For starters, being housebound while the rest of the world is essentially at a standstill gives you a lot of time inside your home. For another, the concept of “quaran-cleaning” gives you an opportunity to determine what you really need in your life. Contemplating the usefulness and true value of what you own is actually a gift. Two…..
Today is writer Virginia Woolf”s birthday. Born in Kensington (a London residential district) 140 years ago, her writing remains as relevant today as it was when she first committed her thoughts to paper. This quote of hers in particular resonates with me as a writer: “If you do not tell the truth about yourself you cannot tell it about other people.” ― Virginia Woolf Writers are observers, and while some writing can be classified as nonfiction, all writing that has…..
Today is National Peanut Butter Day. Nut butters in general are excellent sources of protein and brain-friendly fats. I usually take a few Justin’s packets with me on flights just in case I’m delayed in an airport or on the tarmac. I’ve also created a nutritious and delicious toast topping that I keep in the refrigerator at all times. I make it in small batches, storing it in a plastic, half-cup-sized container so that it stays fresh and in it’s…..
Somewhere during my mid-40s, I read a book by Pema Chödrön that describes the charnel ground. If you aren’t aware of this term, it refers to an open-air crematorium of sorts, where bodies are left out in the open to decompose naturally—usually connected with Hindu or Buddhist cultures. The charnel ground is full of profound transpersonal significance. It represents the ‘death of ego’ and the end of: • Attachment to this body and life • Craving for a body and…..
What kind of cook are you? The “measure-y, by the book” sort or the stir, sniff and sample sort? For what it’s worth, I think that not only does each approach have merit, but there are certain times when it pays to err on the side of the extreme of either. When I was a little girl, I used to perch on a stool in my grandma’s kitchen and watch as she cooked dinner for us. My knees drawn up…..
The most important aspect of being a great listener is being fully present during your conversations. You must be “here” in order to hear at the highest level. “How do I listen to others? As if everyone were my Master speaking to me His cherished last words.”— Hafiz There’s a saying: that in order to learn, we must listen more and to speak less. The proverb of having two ears and one mouth dictating the ratio of listening to speaking…..
Soil holds many analogies for renewal and growth. Today, I’m sharing an excerpt from my book, Circuit Train Your Brain. Thinking about dormancies is part of my yearly reset. Perhaps it will help you, too: Today, make plans to get some literal dirt under your nails. Whether you are a gardener or not, being exposed to the earth is good medicine. There’s evidence that the composition of soil is beneficial to our mental health. While you may not heard of…..
At the turn of the year, I ask you to take stock of everything that is going WELL in your life right now. If you’re having a difficult time thinking of anything, here’s one thing to consider: if you can read this, you have access to the internet and the ability to read. This isn’t my attempt to “doom shame” you, and it isn’t meant to minimize the extreme suffering experienced by millions of people this year. However, it is…..
It has been a terrible, deadly year. Every year brings its share of death, poverty and sadness, but 2021 has been a catastrophic time for almost all of us on this planet. Not only has the death and pain been so widespread, it didn’t have to be this way. It was made possible and exacerbated by the cowardice and greed of a handful of people who valued financial wealth above the lives of millions of their fellow human beings. I…..
