In honor of Random Acts of Kindness Day, today I’ll share a few ways you can show kindness in your every day life.
At their essence, manners are the recognition and respect of self in other. When we use good manners, we are actually acknowledging our own worthiness of being treated well and with respect. In so saying, I of course realize that not everyone practices good manners. There are many rude (and psychologically wounded) people walking the planet.
Whenever you choose to act in a kind and mannerly way, you are saying to yourself and to others that you respect yourself.
Today, consciously choose to act in a mannerly way when interacting with your fellow humans.
• Say thank you
• Say you’re welcome
• Hold the door open for others
• Offer your seat on the subway to someone
• Let someone off the elevator before you step in
• Apologize when you are wrong
When you encounter someone who is rude, do not answer their rudeness with rudeness. Instead, let it go. Do not take it personally. If you would like, send them a silent thought of kindness, asking Whomever (God, Source, the Universe, the Flying Spaghetti Monster etc.) to intervene on their behalf.
When you shift your attitude to a position of grace, you will experience grace in return. Random kindnesses will be extended to you. Your stress levels will go down. I have personally experienced this state of “good luck,” by the way. Even when things go “poorly” for me, I have found that my fall is always broken by grace.
Practicing manners and kindness will develop your resilience rapidly.
Say aloud to yourself: “I am worthy of good things.”
