Did you know: Happiness is a state of being that you can adjust, like a thermostat on your wall. Everyone is born with a pre-determined Happiness Set Point®. Some of us have a higher setting, while some of us are natural-born Eeyores. The good news is that you have the power to change yours, regardless of the external circumstances in your life.
About four and a half years ago, I got my heart broken, but good. It took me three months after he dumped me before I was able to look at posters on the subway that advertised his alma mater without crying. It was bad. Shortly after I had recovered from that emotional gut punch, I had a professional and public jolt that sent me reeling. We’re talking George Bailey on a bridge on Christmas Eve levels of despair.
I was in a really dark space mentally, and wasn’t sure if I would or could ever be happy again.
But I could, and I am.
Which brings me to today’s post.
I’ve actually been a naturally optimistic person for as long as I can remember. Turns out, that trait is relatively rare. Happiness is not the default setting for many people. But even in my darkest moments, there has always been a flicker of happiness brightening my life. It has been a flame that has lit my path and allowed me to reinvent myself over and over.
• Happiness provided the fuel that propelled me from a farmhouse in Iowa as a single mother.
• It was the light that cast itself on my path when I sold almost everything I owned and moved to Chicago at the age of 45 to expand a nonprofit.
• Happiness has been the lodestar that has helped me to maintain my sanity during these tumultuous years during the time that our world has been upended by a global pandemic.
